Method Studios’ film and episodic teams are integrating with Framestore as part of an exciting plan to offer innovative, best-in-class visual effects from four continents.

Method’s Montreal, Melbourne and Vancouver studios are in the process of being integrated with Framestore, and we hope to have this work fully completed by March 2022. Method Studios/Framestore Melbourne is recruiting an experienced Creature FX Artist for our upcoming 2022/2023 shows. Reporting to the Head of FX, the artist will work within the team to provide high-quality animation for a variety of projects.

This position is open to remote candidates! 

CFX Artists are responsible for providing a wide variety of dynamic simulations for character-based work; including clothing, hair, muscle and skin using Houdini, Maya and any proprietary technology or third-party technology. 

In this role, you will be:

  •  Creating particle, rigid-body, fluid, cloth, fur and/or hair simulations or animations
  • Collaborate with rigging and animation teams to establish Character FX rigs, settings and workflow;
  • Create high quality, realistic simulations that have proper weight, speed and desired performance;
  • Applying lighting and shaders to produce the final rendered image or passing the simulation on to a Lighting Technical Director
  • Using a variety of commercial and proprietary FX tools including Maya and Houdini
  • Working in partnership with other departments to ensure that shots are delivered to the highest possible standard
  • Designing and creating images, elements, effects, pipelines, tools and techniques
  • Communicate regularly with Production and Leads regarding schedules and deadlines
  • Work efficiently as part of a team, or independently, to complete assigned shots
  • Submit shots for review and follow through with notes as required

Job requirements

This job is for you if:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in a similar role; CFX experience in Maya a must

  • A good eye for speed, weight and dynamic properties of moving objects, as well as proficiency in collecting and applying reference when needed;

  • Strong knowledge of Houdini, Maya, nCloth, Qualoth or similar softwares;

  • Demonstrable ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas;

  • Ability to take directions and adapt to changes;

  • Excellence at improvising and problem-solving.

It would also be helpful if you had:

  • Tool building and scripting knowledge;

  • Knowledge of Nuke and Katana;

  • Some scripting skills: Python, hscript, vex, bash;

  • Linux experience;
