Framestore is one of the largest visual effects and computer animation studios in Europe, with over 30 years experience in digital film and video technology. With offices in London, Mumbai, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Montreal, Framestore’s expertise includes visual effects and computer generated imagery.

As Head of FX we will look to you to help us lead all aspects of FX at Framestore across Advertising, Episodic and Immersive shows. You will establish and maintain the benchmark for quality across all shows, leading the way creatively while ensuring the department has the right artists, tools and workflows to deliver the highest standard of work.

You will work closely with the Global Head of CG, Head of CG London and Senior Talent Team to hire, develop and lead the team. This role will still be actively working on projects to maintain passion and keep innovating.


  • Mentoring all London based FX artists and establishing a structure of mentorship and training across leads, seniors, mids and juniors

  • Plan the future development of the FX department with a focus on building a team who are technically and creatively brilliant, as well as working well and cohesively as a team

  • Help plan and standardise workflows across all projects in house, ensuring the highest quality output with an emphasis on efficiencies.

  • Working closely with the Talent Team to ensure that FX Artists are scheduled on the projects that match their skills, interests, and career development, as well as meeting the needs of the specific project

  • Work with the Talent Team and Supervisors on the recruitment of all FX Artists, from junior through to senior

  • Work closely with other departments and global offices, ensuring cooperation and collaboration between Integrated Advertising and Film teams

  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in CG, and participate in discussions concerning strategic tool and workflow development

  • Remaining active on shows, leading a team of FX artists during the shot production phase

  • Work alongside the pipeline team to help manage the needs of the department.

  • Maintain and develop documentation for the department e.g. wiki page.

  • Support CG Supervisors to explore and develop workflows for a project to meet a client’s requirements and specifications

Job requirements

  • Recognition as a highly skilled and respected FX Lead/Supervisor, with industry experience across a wide variety of projects; commercials, features, episodic and an interest and passion for immersive and location based projects

  • Strong expertise in FX techniques and softwares including strong Houdini and Maya knowledge as well as a broad understanding of all disciplines and wider VFX softwares

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team including hiring and retaining key talent

  • Proven experience with managing projects with tight deadlines and the ability to react to sudden creative changes and quick-turnarounds

  • Advanced Python or Mel, GUI scripting and the ability to follow strict coding standards

  • Understands the nature and varied demands of both long form and short term projects, and able to make creative scheduling decisions that results in the long term success of all projects

  • Thorough understanding of the visual effects process and the ability to interpret the artistic brief from the VFX/CG supervisors and Clients
