The Environment Supervisor works with the CG Supervisor, VFX Supervisor and Producer, and is responsible for all Environment aspects of a Film or Episodic creative and technical. This includes developing; maintaining/improving) techniques, providing team-building through developing structure, lead artists roles and responsibilities. The Environment Supervisor also works with the Department Manager and production to facilitate scheduling of artists and resources and works with the HOD to provide artistic and technical notes and direction to the team, both in terms of CG and DMP while developing standards and techniques relative to the show and the department as a whole. The Environment Supervisor will also be involved in client interactions to represent Framestore’s capabilities both technically and creatively. They are responsible for the day-to-day management of the leads / artists / TD’s working on a specific show, as well as the design and construction of department/discipline pipeline/tools/workflows to be used by the other artists on the show.


Responsibilities 

  • Work with VFX/CG Supervisor and with HOD to explore and create the look of an environment for a film to a Client’s requirements and specifications

  • Be present in client calls to receive briefs

  • Work closely with Producers, Supervisors, Artists, and other necessary departments in creating high quality VFX

  • Provide clear direction to all environment/DMP artists, provide reference and art direction help, setting clear objectives, monitoring process, progress and results

  • Work with the department manager to ensure the project is crewed efficiently

  • Have a good working relationship with all the other departments within Framestore and work on ideas and solutions at a holistic level

  • Keep morale within the team high and flag any issues with productivity / motivation

  • Evaluate the creative requirements of a project, determine the technical implications, and make high-level operational decisions. (e.g. balance between third-party tools vs. proprietary development, and selection of specific technical methodologies)

  • Collaborate with software teams when new development are required on a show

  • Determine, modify and maintain the most effective and efficient technical approach and workflow possible

  • Conduct reviews to be final quality control on all deliveries of shots prior to VFX Supervisor and Client review

  • Be aware of potential problems in pipeline tools before they have impact on production

Job requirements

Essential Skills:

  • Extensive production experience in a similar or relevant position with the ability to ensure artists’ work is of a high standard both artistically and technically
  • Thorough understanding of the visual effects process and the ability to interpret the artistic brief from the VFX supervisor
  • Good technical understanding of CG pipelines and the ability to specify efficient workflows and identify additional tools required
  • Good knowledge of 3D modelling, texturing, compositing, rendering and optimization of the workflow
  • Extensive experience in look development and final lighting
  • Good knowledge of 2D and DMP
  • Good knowledge of 2.5D and projection techniques
  • Working knowledge of 3D renderers and Nuke
  • Understanding of colour space and colour
  • Excellent understanding of photography and film with strong artistic skills including knowledge of color, lighting, perspective, scale, and composition
  • Engage Production Leadership and Teams so as to be aware of and enable the team to meet production schedules and budgets
  • Excellent organisational, communication and project management skills
  • Working knowledge / good understanding of the latest CG procedures and techniques
  • Proven creative ability and artistic flair
  • General understanding of coding to guide or assist in tool/pipeline R&D development either as a developer or key client.
