Method Studios’ film and episodic teams are integrating with Framestore as part of an exciting plan to offer innovative, best-in-class visual effects animation from four continents.

Method’s Montreal, Melbourne and Vancouver studios are in the process of being integrated with Framestore, and we hope to have this work fully completed by March 2022.

Method Vancouver is looking for a FX TD to join our amazing team.  As an FX TD at Method Studios, you will be responsible for creating photorealistic “FX,” (usually some natural phenomena such as fire, water, explosions, etc), using Houdini and any proprietary Method technology or third-party technology. You’ll have a good understanding of how to manage large data sets and complex renders as well as a familiarity with the latest techniques and technologies, and have a deep understanding of one or more specialties. As FX TD, you’ll be adept in one or more FX packages, as well as able to develop entire tools or production pipelines, as required by the project.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage software and tools development;

  • Use tools and software developed in-house, proprietary tools, or off-the-shelf software, render photo-realistic FX for film;

  • Be adept at balancing the creation of final renders for shots with building/maintaining systems for creating shots;

  • Work within the Method pipeline and publish tools and scripts as prescribed’

  • Manage your disc space to fit within quota;

  • Create systems that minimize render times;

  • Follow the creative direction of the production communicated by leads and supervisors;

  • Be adept at balancing creative requests with the resources available;

  • Have the ability to work in a team environment under tight deadlines.

Job requirements

This job is for you if:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in a similar role;

  • Strong knowledge of Houdini;

  • Good artistic skills;

  • Demonstrable ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas;

  • Ability to take directions and adapt to changes;

  • Excellence at improvising and problem-solving.

It would also be helpful if you had:

  • Tool building and scripting knowledge;

  • Knowledge of Nuke and Katana;

  • Some scripting skills: Python, hscript, vex, bash;

  • Linux experience;

  • Computer science degree or some other advanced training.
