Method Studios’ film and episodic teams are integrating with Framestore as part of an exciting plan to offer innovative, best-in-class visual effects animation from four continents. Method’s Montreal, Melbourne and Vancouver studios are in the process of being integrated with Framestore, and we hope to have this work fully completed by March 2022. For the time-being your contract and recruitment contact will depend on which studio you apply for, but wherever you are based we look forward to welcoming you to the Framestore family.


At Method Studios Melbourne, the Head of Department - Environments will oversee the creation of the digital environments and maintain a high quality standard. Reporting to the Head of Production and Visual Effects Supervisor, the HOD - Environments ensures Environment Supervisors, Leads and Environments/Generalist team establish the best practices workflow for efficient environment creation, including mock ups, optimizing, test renders and publishing environments within the pipeline for up or down stream. 


You will assist with the creative and technical quality of the output from the team, and delegating work effectively. Working very closely with other HOD's to ensure a clear delivery of all work between departments, and will be working hand in hand with production to define delivery schedules and milestones.


Responsibilities 


  • Work with the VFX Supervisor, Leads to define the creative and technical approach for the show.
  • Work with Production to manage the day to day running of the team and to evaluate artist schedules ensuring they are realistic and achievable.
  • Ensure that bid days are respected and the best possible product is achieved with those bid days.
  • Attend desk rounds with all members of the team on a regular basis.
  • Attend dailies sessions with the team to give feedback/approvals.
  • Meet with show leads on a regular basis to identify inefficiencies or technical problems with the toolset and pipeline, and put in place a plan of action to resolve any issues.
  • Ensure that work carried out fits seamless within the pipeline where possible.
  • Interact professionally with clients and attend reviews.
  • Interpret the client’s vision in respect to environments, in collaboration with other department HOD's and supervisors.
  • Troubleshoot cross-department environment related issues.
  • Collaborate with the Pipeline team and act as a stakeholder with the leads for any environment related software developments.
  • Mentor and train Environment Supervisors, Leads and senior artists to the required skill level.

Job requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • 5-7 years experience as a HOD or Environment Lead with proven capability in managing a team while delivering complex Environment requirements.
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills.
  • Track record as a team leader with strong motivational skills.
  • Significant experience within VFX feature films and episodic with a thorough understanding of the VFX pipeline.
  • Thorough understanding of 3D and 2.5D VFX processes and production pipelines.
  • Expert level knowledge of relevant VFX packages and software.
  • High-level experience shot design, layout, modelling, texturing, lighting and digital matte painting techniques
  • Experience developing concept art into photo-real environments.
  • Good understanding of compositing.
  • Experience working with shoot data including photographic and reference data, HDRIs, photogrammetry and Lidar.
  • Experience with procedural city/terrain generation and scattering tools.
