UE4 Technical Director - Pre-Production

FPS (Framestore' Pre-Production Services) in London, is looking for an experienced Engine TD to work within our team on Virtual Production workflow and toolsets. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of Unreal Engine 4 specifically and animation / VFX pipelines in general.

A high level of technical knowledge combined with a creative sensibility is critical. The right candidate will have the opportunity to help shape the real-time workflow within the Framestore Film division to maximise the efficiency and quality of both asset creation and project execution.

The TD will assist teams of artists in tackling projects and be equipped to provide support on complicated technical issues within Unreal. They will also work closely with our pipeline team to advise on improved integration and implement best practices to maximise efficiency between our real-time and VFX artists.

The TD will have a background in either Virtual Production / Game / Interactive / VR development and will be responsible for guiding the technical vision of multiple projects in film, episodic, immersive and advertising. They will provide support, mentoring and guidance to the wider engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable track-record as a Technical Director on multiple high-profile titles.

Role Responsibilities

  • Work with producers, technical and creative leads to provide input for the budgeting process for real-time elements of a production
  • Use of Unreal’s sequencer for the generation of Game Engine based previs.
  • Pipeline Management - Help design and manage the pipeline from the artists through to deployment.
  • Experience/Game-Engine Creation - Create interaction and functionality using Unreal's Blueprints system.
  • Material Creation - Design complex materials in Unreal and instruct artists on best practices for material creation.
  • Optimization - Optimise content through profiling and enhancing performance with the help of diagnostic tools and instructing the artists on modelling and texturing best practices.
  • Collaborate with programmers to develop and test new features, prototype shader code, and provide useful feedback during R&D phases.

Job requirements

Technical Requirements

  • Extensive professional programming experience using C++ and developing with UE4.
  • High level of familiarity and expertise with all areas of UE4, including a detailed understanding of UE4 networking and the replication layer and advanced experience of Unreal's Blueprints and Sequencer interfaces.
  • Experience using Python to create or maintain a pipeline or toolset
  • Experience with Maya and / or Houdini
  • Hands-on experience driving the technical architecture of a heavily server-based project.
  • Experience creating and managing source control and continuous integration systems for runtime and backend deployments.
  • Experience creating toolset and workflow technical and user documentation
  • Experience with Unity is also desirable.
