Paint & Roto Artist

  • On-site
    • London, Greater London, United Kingdom

Job description

Framestore’s Preproduction Services division enables filmmakers and showrunners to make early-stage, creative decisions that can then guide their entire production. We have over a hundred creatives, technologists and producers working across concept art, previsualisation, virtual production, in-camera VFX, techvis and postvis.

Framestore combines talent and technology to bring life to everything we create. Driven by creativity and inspired by the future, we set out every day to reframe the possible.

About the role

As a Paint and Roto Artist, you’ll be a vital part of the Pre-production Services division, helping filmmakers make early-stage creative decisions. You’ll reconstruct images that don't yet exist and use your artistry to ensure every frame is seamless. We create space for you to innovate, reach your potential, and work alongside the best in the industry.

What you’ll do

  • Create precise roto mattes and use paint techniques to remove rigs and tracking markers.

  • Manage grain, create 2D/3D tracks, and reconstruct elements of the frame.

  • Use Nuke's 3D environment and expressions to project clean plates and UV projections.

  • Help bid on shot timings and develop Framestore-specific gizmos and workflows.

  • Complete basic composites, including keying, grading, and screen insertions.

Job requirements

  • Strong traditional art skills, specifically in composition and colour.

  • Production experience using Nuke and rotoscoping software (ideally Silhouette).

  • An understanding of motion blur and its impact on mattes and patches.

  • Experience with Roto Machine Learning (ML) tools and their integration into professional workflows.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a collaborative approach to feedback.

  • Great organisational skills and a desire to share knowledge with the wider team.

You might also have

  • Previous experience in a dedicated Paint and Roto role.

  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and the Maya 3D interface.

  • Knowledge of Python to create or edit Framestore gizmos.

  • Experience with planar and point tracking software.

  • An interest in photography and practical lighting.
