About the role

The Environment Supervisor at Framestore plays a crucial role in both the creative and technical aspects of a film or episodic production. Reporting to the CG Supervisor, VFX Supervisor, and Producer, this role encompasses developing and enhancing techniques, fostering team growth through structured development, and defining lead artist roles and responsibilities.

Working closely with the Department Manager and production teams, the Environment Supervisor facilitates artist and resource scheduling. In collaboration with the Head of Department (HOD), they provide artistic and technical guidance to the team for both CG and DMP, while establishing show-specific and departmental standards and techniques.

Client interaction is also a key responsibility, where the Environment Supervisor represents Framestore's technical and creative capabilities. They are responsible for the daily management of leads, artists, and TDs on specific shows, as well as designing and building pipeline tools and workflows for other artists to utilize.

What you’ll do:

  • Work with VFX/CG Supervisor and with HOD to explore and create the look of an environment for a film to a Client’s requirements and specifications

  • Provide clear direction to all environment/DMP artists, provide reference and art direction help, setting clear objectives, monitoring process, progress and results

  • Work closely with Producers, Supervisors, Artists, and other necessary departments in creating high quality VFX

  • Work with the department manager to ensure the project is crewed efficiently

  • Have a good working relationship with all the other departments within Framestore and work on ideas and solutions at a holistic level

  • Evaluate the creative requirements of a project, determine the technical implications, and make high-level operational decisions. (e.g. balance between third-party tools vs. proprietary development, and selection of specific technical methodologies)

  • Collaborate with software teams when new development are required on a show

  • Determine, modify and maintain the most effective and efficient technical approach and workflow possible

  • Conduct reviews to be final quality control on all deliveries of shots prior to VFX Supervisor and Client review

Job requirements

What we’re looking for:

  • Extensive production and supervision experience in a similar or relevant position, with the ability to ensure artists’ work is of a high standard both artistically and technically

  • Good technical understanding of CG pipelines and the ability to specify efficient workflows and identify additional tools required

  • Good knowledge of Extensive experience in look development and final lighting

  • Holistic knowledge of the generalist environment pipeline with good knowledge of 2D and DMP, 2.5D and projection techniques, 3D modelling, texturing, compositing, rendering and optimization of the workflow

  • Working knowledge of 3D renderers and Nuke

  • Experience in engaging Production Leadership and Teams so as to be aware of and enable the team to meet production schedules and budgets

  • Coding experience in Python

You might also have:

  • Experience with other render packages

  • Proven creative ability and artistic flair
