About the role

Modellers are responsible for the production of highly accurate and efficient CG models for use in high-end visual effects films. Modellers will work from reference, which may include photographs, scan data, blueprints and/or concept designs. Modellers work closely with creative departments (Texture/ Environments/Rigging/CFX/FX etc) in order to produce models that meet the specific requirements of the VFX pipeline.

The Lead Modeller will provide show leadership for modellers and texture artists.


What you’ll do

  • Lead and Mentor: Lead the show's Modelling team, setting a high professional standard and actively mentoring junior artists to foster their development.

  • Quality Assurance: Maintain full responsibility for the quality, fidelity, and technical integration of all 3D assets, from hero models to background props, providing regular, constructive feedback.

  • Hands-on Modelling: Produce critical hero assets or required models as necessary to support the team's output.

  • Review and Presentation: Attend Dailies/Reviews, presenting the team's work and guiding artists on effective presentation techniques.

  • Technical Strategy: Understand the key show assets and preemptively address potential creative and technical challenges involved in their creation.

  • Pipeline Management: Establish, document, and enforce standardized workflow templates and technical approaches across the team.

  • Assignment & Bidding: Manage team assignments and collaborate with HOD/Supervisors to provide accurate technical input for project bidding.

  • Key Contact: Act as the primary communication link between the Modelling team, Production, and Supervisors regarding asset status, creative solutions, and scheduling updates.

  • Inter-Departmental Liaison: Maintain strong relationships with other departments and promptly resolve cross-discipline integration issues.

  • Reporting: Report crewing issues, technical blockers, and conflict resolution matters to the HOD and Department Manager (DM).

Job requirements

What we’re looking for

  • Industry Experience: A minimum of 8 years of relevant working experience in high-end Visual Effects (VFX) projects within a global studio environment.

  • Specialisation: Demonstrated expertise and a strong portfolio focus in Creature and Character Modelling

  • Software Proficiency: Expert working knowledge of Maya is essential.

  • Modelling: Exceptional modelling skill with the ability to create clean, highly detailed, and accurate geometry.

  • Texturing: Proven efficiency in UV layout with a strong understanding of subsequent texture and shading requirements.

  • Asset Interpretation: Proven ability to accurately interpret and follow diverse reference material to create precise and detailed 3D models.

  • Team Leadership: Prior experience providing direct leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a team of 3D artists.

  • Creative Aptitude: Must be a creative and resourceful problem solver with a strong spatial awareness.

  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills suitable for liaising with artists, supervisors, and production teams.
