The multi-Oscar-winning creative Film & Episodic studio, at Framestore has worked with some of the greatest storytellers in film today. This is a new role within our team. Look Development Artists are responsible for producing look development and shading for high quality photorealistic CG assets to be used in high end VFX films.

What you’ll do:

  • Work closely with the VFX/CG Supervisors and Head of Department to determine the best approach to solving look development challenges and achieving the required look

  • Collaborate with other asset departments to ensure look development requirements are met

  • Support the Head of Department with setup/development of new shading and lookdev methods

  • Make sure that shading setups are efficient in order to optimise render-farm usage

  • Staying on schedule and meeting set deadlines while maintaining the highest levels of quality

Job requirements

Essential Skills:

  • Previous experience in look development for VFX films

  • Strong knowledge of physically plausible shading and rendering techniques

  • Extensive knowledge of either PRman, Arnold or similar raytrace based production renderers

  • A good knowledge of lighting techniques and real-world lighting/photography

  • A good understanding of colour-space

  • A basic knowledge of Nuke or similar compositing package, including how to use layers and passes to tweak a shot after it has been rendered

  • Good all-round knowledge of other disciplines within VFX including: simulation, modelling and UV mapping, texturing and camera tracking

  • Excellent organisation, communication and interpersonal skills

  • Creative problem solving and attention to detail

  • Able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining high quality results

  • Able to work successfully as part of a team as well as independently

  • Reliable, with good timekeeping and the ability to meet deadlines

  • Flexible and adaptable with the ability to work within a pre-set workflow or pipeline but also with the creativity and problem-solving skills to work around issues

  • A thorough knowledge of Maya

  • Good knowledge of Python and/or Mel scripting

  • A strong understanding of Linux/Unix based operating systems


You might also have:

  • Experience with digital paint software such as Photoshop, Mari and/or Substance Painter

  • Experience and knowledge in modelling and texturing
