Prep/Paint Lead

Job description

Paint Artists work with Compositors to help them integrate all elements of an image, including CG and live action, to create film visual effects shots. They remove unwanted items from plates, such as; wires, rigs, crew, mocap people and tracking markers. They clean up the backgrounds of live action-footage ready for the effects to be layered onto it by the compositor.

In addition, the Prep/Paint Lead will have the following responsibilities:

Prep/Paint Leads will be responsible for;


  • Manage a team of artists on a show
  • Set the standard of work for your team, always demonstrating an expert level of skills and understanding of paint work
  • Create a P show Wiki page with relevant technical information for artists to follow on the show
  • Liaise with the Comp Supe/ 3D Supe to understand P requirements for a project
  • Accurately bid paint tasks
  • Brief outsource vendors and create simple briefing images and descriptions
  • Lead live meetings with outsource vendors to discuss schedules, briefings and kickbacks
  • Where necessary take responsibility for delivering complex shot work
  • Establish workflow templates, methods and approach & provide documentation for other artists on the team where necessary
  • Ensure that department tools are available for your team and properly set up for the show
  • Advise HOD of any advances made on a project for integration into other shows
  • Work with the HOD/ Supervisor on bidding for new shows
  • Assign appropriate tasks to Senior, Mid and Junior team members, showing a strong understanding of their abilities and strengths
  • Act as the key contact for production and supervisors, ensuring clear communication, dealing with creative challenges, solutions and adapting to changes in production & scheduling
  • Maintain good relations with all other departments, foresee potential complications, and address any issues promptly
  • Attend dailies and represent the work of your team, guide artists on how to present work
  • Train, share knowledge and assume some responsibility for the progression of more junior members of the team

Job requirements

Essential Skills:

  • A proven track record of successfully leading a team at a large scale vfx set up
  • Having an experience of 7+Years or above
  • Advance level expertise software: Nuke and Photoshop
