Welcome and thank you for your interest in the summer Launchpad Internship in our Montreal studio. We wanted to create a little guide to help you understand the roles and responsibilities of the roles. You will find here an overview of the role, the technical skills, and the software required. You will also find tips on what we would like you to showcase in your reel, and other relevant information.

Role overview and qualifications

Animation

As an Animator, you'll produce high-quality animation that creates compelling, story-driven, and action-packed moments that fit within the style and pacing of the film.

What are we looking for:

  • Animation experience in Maya

  • Understanding of aesthetic movement and animation fundamentals

  • Creature (quadriped) and biped work is a plus

  • Use of reference is a plus



Assistant Technical Director

The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) is part of our entry-level role for our Pipeline team or other Technical Director roles such as FX, Lighting, Rigging, and many more. The ATD performs a diverse series of technical support and engineering functions to ensure the smooth running of our film visual effects projects.

What are we looking for:

  • Generalist knowledge of any 3D software (Maya, Houdini, Blender, etc)

  • Technical and problem-solving skills

  • Technical knowledge such as coding in Python is a plus

  • Experience in creating tools is a plus



FX

FX Technical Directors create CG renditions of naturalistic physical or magical phenomena such as fire, water, clouds, smoke, physical destruction and particule.

What are we looking for:

  • Strong Knowledge of Houdini

  • Work showing a good mix of FX discipline: particles, volumes, destruction, water, etc.

  • Demonstration of good artistic and/or Technical skills



Groom TD

The Groom Technical Director creates hair, fur and/or feather grooms for characters and creatures in high-end VFX film projects. What are we looking for:

  • Strong knowledge of Maya

  • Character and creature groom work

  • Fabric fuzz and prop grooms

  • Artistic eye at matching reference

  • Houdini experience is a plus



Layout TD

Layout is responsible for building/maintaining all elements that make up a shot to make it ready for the Animation department. This layout is used to setup/pre-visualize shots correctly before the beginning of animation and allow downstream CG departments to use as the foundation for shot construction. What are we looking for:

  • Familiarity in Maya

  • Experience in establishing a camera for animation

  • Experience in rough blocking, rough modeling work

  • Generalist knowledge of VFX pipeline is a plus



Lighting Technical Director

As a Lighting TD, you will assemble 3D scenes, including assets from various departments, and design the lighting for the shots, following the instructions of the visual effects supervisors, 3D computer graphics (CG) supervisors or sequence editors What are we looking for:

  • Strong understanding of lighting composition

  • Understanding of reference sphere and MacBeth chart

  • Able to match reference and eye for good CG integration

  • Knowledge of Path Tracer Render (not realtime) and physically based lighting/rendering

  • Knowledge of Houdini software is a plus

  • Grasp of photography principles is a plus



Modeling

Modellers are responsible for the production of highly accurate and efficient CG models for use in high-end visual effects films. Modellers will work from references which may include photographs, scan data, blueprints and/or concept designs. Modellers work closely with Texture Artists in order to produce models and UVs that meet the specific requirements of a VFX pipeline. What are we looking for:

  • Base knowledge of Maya

  • Modeling experience in any modeling tool/software is a plus

  • High-poly hero asset work (Organic and/or Hard-surface)

  • Matching reference is a plus

  • Showing UV packing aren’t necessary



Rigging Technical Director

Rigging Technical Directors are responsible for designing, creating and maintaining highly accurate and efficient rigs for high end visual effects films. Riggers work closely with Modelers and Animators to develop and refine rigs that meet the specific requirements of a VFX pipeline.

What are we looking for:

  • Maya rigging raw knowledge

  • Anatomy, muscle deformation

  • Code : Python, C++ (optionnal)

  • Facial rigging, FACS (facial action coding system) knowledge

  • Problem solving: try to show a complex problem, and how you solved it

Reel and portfolio best practices

  • We are looking for Photoreal work

  • If it's a video, keep the reel brief (45sec-1min30)

  • Put the software and tell us your contribution in the shots

  • Aim for quality over quantity

  • Show versatility of skills

  • Include personal projects (if possible)

  • Ask for constructive feedback by your peers

  • Make sure your link for reel work (Artstation and Vimeo are industry standard)
